Letter: Which institute

Allan Alstead (Comment, 24 August) wrote a piece in which he signed himself as a "Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport" thereby, no doubt, seeking to give his views some form of credence or substance.

Whether or not I agree with his views, I feel compelled to point out that the Chartered Institute of Transport ceased to exist in 1999 when it became the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT (UK)]. Mr Alstead has failed to pick up on this 11-year-old change in his past two anti-tram diatribes.

CILT (UK) is an individual membership organisation as opposed to a trade body or lobbying group and its members will, and do, have widely varying opinions on many matters. It is encouraging to see members raise issues and debate matters such as the trams in the press but it is important that they emphasise that these are their personal opinions, not those of the (correct) institute.
