Letter: Water flow

I noted with interest that the Scottish Government plans to introduce the Scottish Water Bill, giving Scottish Water the power to develop renewable energy projects, in partnership and in competition with established energy companies (your report, 8 September).

With the authority to build wind farms, hydro schemes and green power stations, estimates suggest Scottish Water could generate up to 300 million or more in extra revenues by using its 80,000 acres of land.

This comes weeks after the announcement that councils will be given the power to sell electricity generated from renewable sources to the National Grid.

Such moves will undoubtedly help Scotland reach its renewable energy target of generating 50 per cent of the country's electricity from renewable sources by 2020 and, importantly, will stimulate the next phase of Scotland's green revolution.
