Letter: Under scrutiny

Those, such as Rev Dr Derek Browning (Letters, 12 August), who peddle the view that Roger Scruton condemns homosexuality as a perversion in itself are misguided in their understanding and mistaken in their condemnation of his appointment to St Andrews University.

In his book, Sexual Desire, Scruton clearly states his belief that "homosexuality is perhaps not in itself a perversion, although it may exist in perverted forms" similar to heterosexuality.

Unlike the "uncomfortable" Browning and students who oppose him, Scruton's purpose as a scholar and academic is not to condemn, but to elucidate.
