Letter: Turbine silence

I heard the Scottish Government was considering the future of the Welcon Towers turbine factory near Campbeltown. This usually means pumping in taxpayers' money.

Skycon, the Danish parent company, has decided to close it down. In October 2010 it filed for a "suspension of payments" in the Danish courts.

The Scottish Government has already given grants of 2.4 million of the total promised of 9.2m to safeguard 100 jobs.

The previous owner, Vesta, pulled out of the site because it did not consider it viable. In its fixation for "green energy" the Scottish Government will turn somersaults if you ask it.

Alex Salmond predicted that the takeover of the plant would transform the economic fortunes of the Kintyre peninsula.

He is strangely and unusually silent now.

No further grants must be given since taxpayers may have lost 2.4m but not 9.2m.
