Letter: Trams debacle

Make no mistake, the nightmare of the Edinburgh trams is here to stay (your report, 1 July).

If funds are eventually found to complete a section, it will cost at least double what the present estimate suggests and the interest charge, never mentioned by the pro lobby, will go on forever.

In addition, if a section of the track should ever come into operation, experience shows it is certain to run at a serious loss. All this to satisfy the childlike daydreams of some Edinburgh councillors who show a level of incompetence beyond comprehension.

Stop this madness and cut the losses now or Edinburgh taxpayers should be prepared to meet the frightening financial consequences for all time.

I was quite shocked on listening to Edinburgh Council leader Jenny Dawe on television the other evening, discussing the tram project. She tried to belittle the mess by commenting along the lines of: "Other public sector projects, such as the Holyrood Parliament, were over budget, hence we must not worry."

If she really means this, her comments beggar belief. And it's fitting that the mess is a transport project, as the poor old taxpayer is being taken for a ride again.

I refer to the article about trams (27 June) which showed a photograph of Jenny Dawe sitting at the controls in one of the proposed trams which was showing the number 252.

Anyone who has had connections with the army will know that 252 is the number of a charge sheet. How appropriate.
