Letter: Tram democracy

Isn't our local democracy wonderful? From your letters pages it is clear that many citizens, some well qualified in the subject, are of the opinion that the tram scheme should be terminated forthwith, yet our "representatives", as a body, are hell-bent on having some sort of tram operation, no matter what it costs.

No doubt, if dissatisfied, we can get rid of them at the next election, but by then, it seems, new onerous contracts will have been signed.

In view of all the delays in this project is it really impossible to defer a final decision for a further few months to allow citizens to see exactly what is proposed and have their say, via the ballot box, on this important matter before the die is finally cast?
