Letter: Top drawer

IT IS opportune that Duncan MacMillan should, in his review of Poussin to Seurat: French Drawings from the National Gallery of Scotland, (8 February) raise the issue of drawing in relation to its tradition at Edinburgh College of Art.

While art schools up and down the country are cutting facilities and specialist teaching, Edinburgh College of Art maintains discipline specific provision. Drawing is crucial to underpinning, informing and developing this learning process across all areas of the college.

With more than 4,000 applications for undergraduate places in art and design, it is clear that the college is not "closing its doors".

Quite the opposite: the proposed merger with the University of Edinburgh will open up exciting possibilities.
