Letter: Terrace bigotry

John Doonan (Letters, 28 June) asserts that the only source of hatred of others, be it based on religion, race, sexual orientation or colour, is in the home.

The real problem in Scotland is not sectarianism in terms of Roman Catholics and Protestants, but rather the utter hatred that many supporters of Celtic and Rangers have for their opposite numbers. The historical roots of Celtic and past policies of Rangers have created an environment in which that hatred is often expressed through sectarian chants and other unsavoury practices.

While parents do have an influence on children regarding tolerance for others it is the bile that flows from the terracing at Ibrox and Parkhead that fuels our so-called sectarian problems.
