The BMA estimates that if universities charge the 9,000 rate allowed under these plans, students will see their debts increase to around 70,000, with many families being faced with an impossible financial burden that could end the career aspirations of their children before they have begun. The impact of these proposals will not be limited to England. Scottish universities will not be able to compete without additional funding but this must not be at the expense of Scottish students. We must not make reckless decisions now that will make university an unattainable dream for thousands of talented young people.
