Letter: Stubbed out

Ian McLaren (Letters, 18 August) wonders if shock tactics might highlight to youngsters the danger of smoking.

When I was at primary school in Larbert in about 1959 my classmates and I had a visit from the school nurse.

She showed us two plastic containers, one containing a healthy human lung and the other blackened by cigarette tar.

It certainly made a strong impression upon me and smoking was a vice I managed to avoid.

It was perhaps a pity that she was not able to bring some other similarly diseased human organs which might have highlighted the future dangers of over-drinking and over-eating!
