Letter: STD not to blame

It is illogical to suggest that the single transferable vote (STD) is to blame for the link between electors and elected being broken (Letters, 8 May).

This has come about because the Scottish Parliament decided to merge three or four wards into one large constituency with multiple representatives.

Certainly STD was involved in this, but only because it opened up the possibility of a popular or respected candidate securing enough second choice votes to prevent the seat going to any of the political parties. This is democracy at work.

Voter disenchantment with politicians is a much more likely candidate for the consistently low turnouts we have been having for many years now.
