letter: Social strength

I CAN'T begin to express my admiration for the Tariq Jahan, the man whose son Haroon was one of the three young people killed during the unrest in Birmingham in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

When others might have raged and called for vengeance, Mr Jahan advised those involved to "calm down and go home".

After he had addressed the press, tension erupted among the onlookers and some of them started shouting.

His response to this was: "Have some respect. I have lost a son. Don't kick off again."

Of all the people affected by the crazy behaviour that's taken over parts of some of our cities, he's the one who would be most forgiven for wanting to lash out, but he was calm and wise.

This is proper community leadership.

Why can't more people behave in this honorable fashion?
