Letter: Smart move

Much has been said and written about the surprise promotion of Alan Johnson to the post of shadow chancellor. A decision by Ed Miliband of political brilliance or of political suicide, given Mr Johnson's first comment, that he was off to find a book called "Economics for Beginners"?

Alan Johnson was a true supporter of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, and was transparent in his support of David Miliband in the contest for Labour leadership.

Why then, should Ed Miliband be enamoured by him? The answer is clear and simple - Alan Johnson is the "real deal", a true party faithful, who never considers what is best for himself.

He is man of great integrity, who is morally strong, and Ed Miliband can rely on his strength and determination to take the fight to George Osborne.

The comparisons between the Chancellor and shadow chancellor could not be greater, and this should lend itself to contrasting and entertaining politics. Let battle commence!
