Letter: Shop racket

I AM glad the City of Edinburgh Council is to crack down on the volume of noise being emitted on to the streets from shops selling tartan goods (your report, 2 August).

While confessing to being a supporter of all things Scottish, including bagpipe music, I must say that during a recent visit to Edinburgh my wife and I, along with many of the tourists, were appalled at the level of noise coming out of these shops.

However the "tartan" shops are not the only guilty ones in respect of loud music. Go into most shops and watering holes in any city centre these days and your ears are subjected to loud music which could never be described as "background" music.

It seems to me that silence in many establishments is something which must be avoided at all costs.
