Letter: Share alike

John McTernan's article on being British, among other things (Perspective, 6 July), was interesting.

One of the attractions of Britishness is being part of the British family - Welsh, English, Northern Irish, the Scots, and the children of the Empire - while being, for example, a Scot as well. We share a joint history and geography.

The SNP claim that we can become independent but somehow remain part of this family. If so, whatever you call it, it cannot be independence.
