Letter: Safety at sea

I was very concerned to read of the Health & Safety Executive's (HS&E) concerns about the standard of offshore maintenance with some operators failing to focus on the fabric of their installations, some of which are nearing the end of their commercial life (your report, 22 December).

As an example of this Talisman Energy UK has been issued with an H&SE improvement notice for its sprinkler system for the Fulmar platform, which serves as a sinister reminder that it was the failure of the sprinkler system on Piper Alpha tragedy which lead to the worlds worst oil offshore disaster.
