Letter: Safety drive

M HORNEM (Letters, 23 October) would ban drivers from smoking on safety grounds. Excellent idea. And while we're at it, let's ban all in-car distractions such as the consumption of beverages hot or cold; the ingestion of foodstuffs, including chewing gum and sweeties; radio, CD and MP3 players etc; satellite navigation; dangly things on interior mirrors; window stickers and any loose objects that could roll or rattle. Oh, nearly forgot, tinted windaes.

This could be easily legislated by requiring vehicle manufacturers to cease the fitment of such devices as cupholders, sound systems, parcel shelves and the myriad electronic "driving mode" selection systems.
