Letter: Rural resolve

I READ with interest the Scottish political party manifestos, which all seemed to have an emphasis on support for small businesses and particular policies geared towards supporting rural areas and the agricultural industry.

There have been undoubted challenges for Scotland's rural economies in the recent years and months - from the effects of the downturn through to rising oil prices. However, farmers and rural business owners have shown great resolve and developed innovative ways to remain competitive and survive.

The Scottish Government has an integral role to play in this through its support of the burgeoning renewables industry and helping rural economies reap the benefits of this, through to access to business lending, support and advice and lobbying on fuel prices. I hope that, whatever happens come 5 May, MSPs and government have supporting rural economies high up on the political agenda.
