Letter: Right to rule?

Brian Allingham (Letters, 28 October) suggests the use of DNA to ensure the legitimacy of heirs to the throne.

Perhaps in the 21st century, with an educated population living in a democratic country, we should question the whole principle of hereditary rule. The idea that control and power should be vested by inherited status is outdated and undemocratic.

Since the right to rule of the original monarchs was something often taken by force and without real support, the whole hereditary principle is questionable. Our leadership should serve those who nominate them.
