Letter: Referendum test

Regarding the percentage of votes required to carry whatever the proposal is, it should be 50 per cent + 1 of the electorate who take the time to vote (Letters, 15 February).

Until there are penalties for people who are too lazy or can’t be bothered to vote, we have to assume they are happy to go along with the majority. This goes for both sides of the argument. Remember Scottish independence was signed away by half a dozen landowners; no referendum then!
