Letter: Questionable ally

Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has just hosted Afghan president Hamid Karzai and Tajikistan's president Imomali Rakhmon with a view to forming a "regional alliance" after allied troops leave Afghanistan.

After Ahmadinejad ridiculed and vilified the actions of Western troops in the region, Karzai welcomed him to the Afghan capital in March, and all three presidents met Iran's supreme spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

We must wonder why we are paying with the lives of British and American service personnel in order that Afghanistan can engage in an alliance with an Iranian leader, whose oppressive agenda includes the pursuit of nuclear weapons and wiping a neighbouring state from the map?
