Letter: Put out fireworks
Surely I am not alone in feeling unhappy that the world's New Year fireworks display competition on television appears to continue undimmed by the world financial crisis?
I love watching fireworks, but if we all agreed to stop it for a few years, as if there was a war for survival on, TV could still replay previous years' displays, and rich citizens could sponsor tiny floating hot-air balloon lanterns. This happened in our street after the fireworks, and they are quiet, cheap and utterly delightful.
