Letter: Postal service

Over the past ten years Scotland has lost more than 25 per cent of its local post offices, a community service and meeting place for many of our vulnerable and older generation (your report, 30 December). The last Labour government started the demise of this vital and universal service and now the coalition government is striving to complete this objective, with the survival of rural post offices at the forefront.

During the Westminster election in 2010, Tavish Scott, Liberal Democrat leader in Scotland, accused Labour MPs of doing nothing to stop the post office network being decimated.

With elections in Scotland in 2011, the voters deserve to know if Liberal MPs in Scotland will oppose the proposals on the future of our post offices and the provision of universal mail services.
