Letter: Out of step
Congratulations on the excellent photograph of the Hawick Common Riding cavalcade (your report, 11th June). However, captioning it "Tally Ho: Annual Hawick Common Riding does the rounds" was inappropriate.
The use of an Anglicised fox-hunting call shows a lack of understanding of the traditions and sentiments of the Border festival. A more appropriate caption would have been "Safe-oot", "Aye Defend" or "Teribus"! (A Teri is a person from Hawick - derived from Teribus, or Tir y ba, which means Land of Death).
