Letter: Organic whisky is nothing new

THE article on Deanston's organic malt (News, 5 September) reminded me that in 1995 when visiting Springbank distillery in Campbeltown we were shown around five or six casks with the ends painted green. This was whisky made from organic barley supplied by a Welsh farmer and malted at Springbank - he wanted it for his 50th birthday and, although it would only be five years old when bottled, this is an age currently being sold by a few well-established names today.

I don't know if Springbank went to the same extent as Deanston to obtain the organic label but it obviously isn't an unknown or untried product.
