Letter: Older workforce

I write in relation to the news that BMW has set up a factory in Germany specifically geared to accommodate its older workforce (your report, 18 February).

This is a novel initiative and highlights what can be done to recognise older people as contributors to society. While this may not be practically possible in general terms across the board, I think it makes an important statement about how we view our ageing population.

The debate in the UK recently has been moving the retirement age to 66 and removing a forced retiring age. People's personal views on this vary, but what it does highlight is the need to address how society is evolving with an ageing, active and young-at-heart generation.
