Letter: Not so green …

While I appreciate circumstances unfolding in a small pocket of Glasgow's West End may seem small beer in the light of world events, there are issues therein which require wider publicity.

A greenfield site, initially established as football pitches, was allowed to fall into squalor. It was taken up by the local community who, at their own expense, transformed the area. It now thrives as a place for recreation, allotments and wildlife.

Glasgow Council, in defiance of its policy of preserving greenfield sites, and despite numerous brownfield sites nearby, has sold the ground to a developer, who intends to shoehorn into it, at a minimum, 95 flats and houses.

As well as the destruction of 400 trees and the loss of urban green space, the sheer scale will represent a considerable imposition on those living in the area.

In addition, the council failed to produce a speaker at a recent public meeting on the planning application, having agreed to do so, symptomatic of the contempt with which it views due process and the opinions of residents.
