Letter: Norse code

Ron Greer (Letters 7 March) states Lewismen have a similar vocal intonation as the Norwegians in Vest Agder. Some years ago two of my seafaring friends from Lewis were on a ship that docked at Reykjavik.

An old man who heard them speaking Gaelic asked where in Norway they were from. When they said Lewis, he said: "Well, your accent is from north Norway."

In my youth in Lewis the old fishermen still used the Viking name when referring to Cape Wrath - Parbh. I wonder if this word is still in use in the island.
