Letter: No refunds

John Hein (Letters, 28 May) wonders about the plight of those who have already paid money for an ID card that is soon to be worthless.

These people backed the wrong horse, voluntarily supporting an authoritarian government in a spectacularly misguided scheme, and it is not for the Conservatives, or even the Lib Dems, to bail them out.

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase the illusion of temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety – and they certainly don't deserve a refund.
