Letter: No rail value

Bombardier, which produces trains in Derby, is due to lose 2,000 jobs as the contract to build 1,200 Thameslink carriages has been awarded to Siemens in German (your report, 5 July).

Rail minister, Theresa Villiers, describes the contract as "best value for money for taxpayers". The ignorance is staggering: 2,000 fewer people paying income tax, 2,000 more people on the dole. Unspecified number of suppliers to Bombardier also put at risk.

How on earth is that "best value"?
