Letter: Minimal effect

I am a little tired and frustrated to hear the repeated political drum beating on the subject of minimum prices for alcohol (your report, 18 March), which is a completely flawed and ineffective approach to this very serious problem which has faced Scotland for many years.

Introducing minimum prices for alcohol would only serve to line the pockets of the retailers and would have zero effect on binge drinking and the social problems created by alcohol abuse.

As an example of the effect of prices of legalised drugs, cigarette prices have never been higher but does little to deter the determined smoker.
