Letter: Met déjà vu

The possibility of Glaswegian Stephen House becoming Metropolitan Police Commissioner has a real sense of déjà vu about it (your report, 30 July). In 1977 another Glaswegian, David McNee, also Chief Constable of Strathclyde, became Metropolitan Police Commisioner.

His task then also was to sort out a Met in profound crisis. He initiated Operation Countryman to weed out corrupt officers. Here is yet another reminder that Scotland's top talent gets drawn south at every level. We are a poorer nation for it.
