Letter: MEP reassurance

I would like to thank Ronald Rankin for taking an interest in the important issue of MEP representation (Letters, 23 August). I would like to reassure him that there are no serious proposals to change the system of national electors choosing national representatives to the European Parliament.

With the debate on proportional representation for Westminster looming, it may be preferable for MEPs to be elected through a form of PR on a smaller regional basis within Scotland, rather than on a single list for the whole of Scotland.

This would provide closer representation of people's interests andmay help connect theEuropean Parliamentmore closely to local communities.
