Letter: Megrahi release

One year on, the Scottish Government's release of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi remains an appalling betrayal of our American allies, a deep embarrassment to the Scottish people, and a fundamental abandonment of the Lockerbie victims' right to justice.

If there were concerns about the safety of Megrahi's conviction, he should have been released on that basis. No-one complicit in the cold-blooded murder of 270 people deserves any compassion.

The medical professionals on whose advice Megrahi was released now appear so wrong as to warrant professional inquiry into their conduct and motives.

Likewise, the SNP administration knew what it was getting into when it released him, and should now have the decency to fall on its sword, having made Scotland the laughing stock of the free world.
