Letter: Make 'em pay

Scotland's leading business lobby supports back-dated tuition fees and asking students to pay back the cost of their degrees. Iain McMillan, director of CBI Scotland, says it is "reasonable to expect graduates to make a financial contribution once their salaries have passed above a £21,000 threshold" (your report, 24 February).

Perhaps Mr McMillan will support back-dating tuition fees to - let's say - 1970 and clawing back money from all those who have benefited financially since then from achieving a university degree, when student debt was unheard of and jobs were plentiful.

In particular, we should be targeting all those greedy bankers and useless politicians who contributed to the economic mess we now find ourselves in but who would have no qualms about burdening the present generation of students with such debt. What hypocrites!
