Letter: Majority do not support Gerald Warner

GERALD Warner is still fighting the battles of the last century, and wrongly claiming the majority is with him (Strictly Speaking, 2 May).

It is ten years since the repeal of Section 28. None of Gerald Warner's dire predicted consequences have come true; Scotland is just a slightly more comfortable place to grow up gay. Public opinion has moved on too. In the 2002 Scottish Social Attitudes Survey, only 29 per cent of Scots (33 per cent of Catholic Scots) were still opposed to same-sex marriage. By 2006 that had dropped further, to 21 per cent.

Philip Lardner is entitled to express his views, and to stand for election on them. But those views are no longer shared by any mainstream political party, and at the time of writing I would guess that they are unlikely to be shared by a majority of people in North Ayrshire and Arran.
