Letter: Lost deposit

I SHARE Alex Murray's dismay over the rejection of the plan for the Cononish gold mine near Tyndrum (Letters, 28 August). The Highlands and Islands are potentially rich in mineral resources, which could significantly benefit the Scottish economy.

In addition to gold and silver, platinum group metals, base metals, gemstones and industrial minerals are all known to be present. Finding and developing these resources requires time and money.

What mining company is going to risk investing in the region if it will only be blocked by the local Luddites?
