Suppose for the sake of argument the lawyers Philippe Sands QC discusses in Torture Team (about the legal advice to George W Bush that led to the ill-treatment of terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, 23 August 2010) believe sincerely they have saved thousands of lives.
Are their actions immoral but legal, unlawful but moral or legal and moral?
