Letter: Legacy of debt

WHEN private finance initiatives (PFI/PPP) were created by the Tories, with Thatcher's loyal lieutenant, Secretary of State for Scotland Michael Forsyth being one of its main architects, they were howled down by Labour.

However, when Labour came to power, Blair and Brown found it expedient to continue the system as it freed up billions to do things other than to pay for the schools and hospitals so much needed after Thatcher.

When the credit crunch broke, PFI had added 216 billion to the national debt. Councils are struggling to pay unpaid bills, so as cuts bite, PFI/PPP should not be forgotten, nor should Labour's part in this.
