Letter: Killers not cleared

The headline "Five Iraqis cleared of murdering Red Caps" (your report, 16 August) is inconsistent with the body of the report and potentially upsetting for the families of the victims.

The five are reportedly not to go on trial so have not been "cleared" which to me means established as innocent of the charges. A judge has found inadequate evidence put before him to justify proceeding to trial. That is all.

It seems to be a frequent practice of the media to refer to accused as having been "cleared" when all that has happened has been a finding of insufficiency of evidence.
