Letter: Key to culture

Cardinal Keith O'Brien claims that religion, not secularism, is the key to our culture (23 April). I could not disagree more.

The culture we should strive for is one where believers and non-believers can live together in harmony respecting the position of each other.

He also talks about "aggressive secularism"; I would be interested to know what this is. The main aggression against Christianity I am aware of is that created within the Christian faith as a consequence of the multitude of different interpretations as to what the true message of Christianity is.

There is also the aggression against Christianity by other religions. I believe his attack on secular organisations is an attempt to divert attention from the real enemies of his Church.

Why do some of our councils show such disrespect towards Christians?

Not long ago, Glasgow City Council permitted the defacing of a copy of the Bible in the Museum of Modern Art, and now Edinburgh City Council is subsidising an artist who will burn the sculptured head of Jesus during a festival.

Recently, an individual was jailed for burning a copy of the Koran, yet the damaging of Christian symbols seems to be tolerated and condoned by those in authority. Is it because Christians won't fight back that this cowardly conduct is perpetrated?
