Letter: Jobs hopes

I HOPE the shocking statistics on youth unemployment reported this week will serve as a wake-up call to us all. With more than 100,000 people aged 18-24 out of work in Scotland, addressing youth unemployment must become our top priority in the years ahead.

The Scottish Government has appointed a NEET minister and claims to be investing £30 million to address the issue, which is all well-meaning but will not solve this problem.

The fact is we need business to lead the charge by offering youths the chance to release their potential through a real job providing a real opportunity to realise their aspirations.

I’m delighted to see there has been momentum here: Tom Hunter and Jim McColl have invested significant sums in tackling this challenge but given the size of the problem more needs to be done by everyone in the business community.
