Letter: Job protection

It was disappointing to read the views of Liz Cameron (chief executive of the Scottish Chamber of Commerce) on the proposed changes to this country's employment rights (Comment, 11 January).

Peddling the myth that all employers have the best interests of their employees at heart is altruistic rhetoric.

History tells us that if this was the case then we wouldn't need any employment legislation - legislation, I may add, that is the most business-friendly in developed countries.

In all her years at Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce and at numerous meetings with local politicians, I am not aware of Liz ever mentioning or identifying one single business experiencing problems as a result of employment rights.

Perhaps she is seeing life differently as a result of her elevation, or is, I suspect, seeing a perfect opportunity with this government to put the boot into the workers.

I do not believe that good employers have anything to fear from progressive employment protection and I sincerely hope that local forward-thinking chambers of commerce strangle these proposals at birth
