Letter: Jargon busting

Many readers will have appreciated the entertaining critique by Penny Lewis (Perspective, 7 July) of the so-called Curriculum for Excellence, with its impenetrable jargon and dubious educational value.

More objectionable, however, is the implication that excellence is a new concept in Scottish education; surely a veritable insult to generations of Scottish teachers and pupils.

The letter headed "Mumbo jumbo" (8 July), about managerial jargon in some official communications, reminded me that my mother-in-law recently received a small, but welcome, refund of council tax.

She was keen to know why this had come about, but reading the explanation "reason for refund… refund" proved less than enlightening.
