Letter: Iran’s opposition

IN SAYING that the Mujahedeen-e Khalq (MEK) is “the principle Iranian opposition movement” (“Iran ignores sanctions, so action must start”, 24 February), Lord Fraser of Carmyllie gives a slap in the face to all the brave Persian democrats of the Green Path for Hope movement.

Its leaders, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, are still in detention, following the theft of the 2009 election by Mahmoud Ahmadinajad.

The MEK supported Saddam Hussein’s war of aggression against their own country. That is sufficient to discredit them as quislings. However, there is much more that is gradually being divulged about this murky organisation. The Iraqi authorities may or may not have been heavy-handed with them, but to see the MEK as allies is folly.

Peter Fraser is fretting that Ahmadinajad might acquire some useless piece of nuclear hardware. He should instead be calling for the release of Mousavi and Karroubi. There might even be a bonus here for some: Mousavi is an old hand at trading oil for armaments.
