Letter: Holocaust heroine

I don't think much of Jenny Hjul's search engine skills if she was unable to find any link between Scotland and the Holocaust (column, 16 September).

Jane Haining, born in 1897 in Dunscore near Dumfries, is well known for being the only Scot to die in the gas chambers of Auschwitz and for being the only Scot honoured as being Righteous among Nations by Israel.

She was working as a Church of Scotland missionary with Christian and Jewish children in Budapest when war broke out. When the Nazis rounded up Hungary's Jews in 1944 she chose to stay with the children although, as a Christian, she could easily have avoided being sent to Auschwitz. There were also Scottish military personnel involved in the liberation of Belsen camp.
