Letter: Historic victory

THE Scottish Civic Trust is pleased to hear the announcement of £3.6 million Heritage Lottery Fund support for the proposed new Bannockburn Heritage Centre (your report, 26 July).

This is a significant step forward in realising this important project which will bring to life the story of the Battle of Bannockburn.

The proposals are ambitious and exciting. The combination of bold and confident architecture, intelligent landscaping and modern, high-tech educational and interpretation resources should create a dynamic and memorable experience for the visitors. The solid, defensive character of the exterior of the proposed building is in contrast to the light and welcoming planned interior and courtyard.

The strong, contemporary design adds atmosphere and resonance to the site, the importance of which cannot be underestimated.

It is to the credit of all concerned with creating this new centre, particularly Historic Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland, that it is clear the plans are driven by a desire for quality and sustainability.This will be a landmark project for Stirlingshire and Scotland.
