Letter: Historic headline

I would like to congratulate you for the courageous, balanced article on Her Majesty the Queen's visit to the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin (19 May).

The front page headline, "When history was made", was hugely significant in itself and confirms my view that you understand Irish history and the significance of the ceremony.

That historic bow in the Garden of Remembrance by a British monarch speaks volumes for Her Majesty and her appreciation of the tragedies that Britain has bestowed on Ireland over the past 800 years. I personally attended the 50th Anniversary of the Revolution celebrations in 1966 and I would never have believed that I would have lived to read those headlines in a Scottish newspaper in my lifetime.

You deserve the accolade of Scotland's national newspaper.

Keep up the excellent work.

Anti-royalists should take careful note that it has taken Her Majesty the Queen only a couple of days to achieve what politicians have been trying to do for years, ie to establish friendly and peaceful dialogue between the UK and Eire.

Tribute should also be paid to the Eire president, Mary McAleese, in this matter. God save the Queen.
