Letter: Hibs before Celtic

I was surprised to see Tom Minogue claiming that "Celtic FC - uniquely in UK football - was born of Irish immigrants" (Platform, 15 November).

Has he never heard of Hibernian FC, founded in Edinburgh in 1875 by Canon Hannan of St Patrick's RC Church in the Cowgate?

Hibs were the direct inspiration for Glasgow Celtic, founded 13 years later in 1888, and indeed Celtic's first ever team contained seven players signed up from Hibs on account of their Irish credentials and proven footballing skill.
