Letter: Happy endings

IT IS gratifying and reassuring, amid the usual Christmas TV ratings war debate to see that the most-watched non-soap show on British television on Christmas Day was a drama, Dr Who, about a man who dedicates his life (lives) to helping others – a programme devised by a group of media visionaries in 1963, whose legacy, thankfully, has been handed down through generations of scriptwriters and producers and still thrives, albeit somewhat “rebooted”, nearly 50 years later.

So this Christmas we were treated to wholesome British-made family entertainment in which no-one died, the lead characters all looked after each other, and there was a happy ending with genuine tears of joy. What a relief that television drama with those ingredients can still pull in the audiences – there is hope for us yet!
